5 pitfalls of AI content generation to watch out for.

Written by Andre Suazo | Aug 20, 2024 11:30:00 AM

If you’re a Director/Manager of Marketing or VP/Director of Growth or Demand, solving for content is probably a top-of-mind challenge.

Content is the gasoline for driving your digital marketing and demand gen. engine.

After all, most marketing experts agree that when people consistently find value in your content, they are more likely to come to you first when it’s time to buy.

Think in terms of growing your fan base, not just having more followers.

But it takes a huge investment in time and resources to create consistent quality content day-in and day-out.

So here comes AI to the rescue, right? Well … sort of.

The truth is that while AI presents new opportunities you can leverage, there are also some major pitfalls you need to watch out before plugging ahead.

Some of the risks with AI-Generated content are:

  1. Quality: If you’re not careful, AI-generated content lacks the nuance, contextual understanding, and creativity that humans bring. This often results in content that is technically accurate but lacks depth and authenticity.
  2. Data: AI relies heavily on data, and if this data is biased or flawed, the resulting content may be misleading or inaccurate.
  3. Mediocrity: Content created by AI often times lacks the human element, resulting in bland, forgettable content that fails to stand out or establish authority within an industry.
  4. Poor User Experience: AI content that falls short in authenticity and depth delivers a piss-poor user experience which will damage your brand's reputation.
  5. SEO Risks: Google's E-E-A-T guidelines prioritize content created by experienced, trustworthy experts, which AI-generated content can struggle to meet.

So how do you solve for this?

Do we abandon AI and go back to the old-fashioned way of doing things?

Like we did in 2020?

Relax, we don’t have to turn our backs on innovation just yet.

Consider some of these strategies to mitigate for these pitfalls:

  1. Human Oversight: You should ensure content is reviewed and edited by humans before publishing.
  2. Content Approval Workflows: Establish guidelines and approval workflows to vet for accuracy and voice alignment.
  3. Diversify your Content Sources: Don’t over rely on AI for content. Mix it up with content created by industry experts or by users in your niche or industry.
  4. IMPORTANT - Prioritize Creativity and Originality: You should be leveraging AI as a tool to enhance and augment your human creativity, rather than as a complete replacement. Use it to streamline your process while preserving the unique human touch in the final content. (4th wall break: this is exactly what I’m doing here)
  5. Be Human-Centric: Consider investing in training and development so your team can effectively leverage AI tools.

TL;DR: So what’s the long and short of it? Leverage AI for efficiency, not replacement.

You should focus on using AI to streamline and augment your content creation process.

AI is an innovative tool, but it can’t be your end all or you could create poor user experiences with bland mediocre content that inspires no one.

P.S. Here’s a hint - A.I. isn’t going away, but it’s also not what you think. Donna the copywriter in Marketing isn’t going to be replaced by a better robot version.

But Donna WILL be replaced by Meg who knows how to use A.I. to 100X her output.
